The Benefits Of Sleeping On Your Left Side May Surprise You

It might be time to switch up your sleeping position, no matter if you’re a left side, back, or stomach sleeper.

This particular sleeping posture could improve your overall health and comfort.

Herbalist Ali Ramadan, known as @holisticali, highlighted the benefits of sleeping on your left side in a TikTok video that garnered 406.9k likes.

In just fifteen seconds, Ramadan shared compelling reasons to sleep on your left side.

“Dramatically switched to the left side after seeing this vid,” commented one user. “I tried it, it’s true it makes a difference,” said another.

The Surprising Benefits of Sleeping on Your Left Side

According to Ramadan, sleeping on your left side can alleviate heartburn and stomach issues while promoting a restful night’s sleep.

“When we sleep on the left side, the stomach and its gastric juices remain lower than the esophagus, reducing heartburn and digestive upsets,” Ramadan explained.

This position can also help relieve back pain by avoiding pressure on the spine.

Jeff Kahn, co-founder of Rise Science, explained that while there’s no universally correct way to sleep, left-side sleeping can benefit those with specific conditions.

“It might be advantageous for pregnant women as it can improve circulation to the heart, benefiting both mother and baby,” Kahn said.

He also noted that side sleeping aids digestion and reduces heartburn due to the body’s digestive tract layout.

Do you sleep on the left side? There are benefits to both right side sleeping and left side sleeping. The research shows it is better for digestive health to sleep on the left side, and for those who have heart failure it is better to sleep on the right side. Martin Seeley, CEO of Mattress Next Day, added that left-side sleeping can enhance circulation, benefiting those with heart disease or high blood pressure.

“Sleeping on the left side can increase circulation and is often recommended for those with cardiovascular issues,” Seeley said.

Although left-side sleeping seems beneficial, Kahn emphasized choosing a position that ensures restful sleep and suits your body.

“The best sleeping position is the one that allows you to get enough healthy, naturalistic sleep,” Kahn stated.

If your current position works for you, it might be best to stick with it to avoid waking up on the wrong side of the bed.
