Heat oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper for easy release.

Prepare Dry Ingredients: Mix all-purpose flour, baking powder, soda, and salt in a large bowl. It distributes dry goods equally.

Cream sugar and unsalted butter in a large dish. Mix on medium speed for 2-3 minutes using an electric mixer.

Mix eggs and vanilla before adding. Tastes great with vanilla.

Buttermilk and dry ingredients gradually into butter mixture. Prepare and finish using dry ingredients. Avoid overmixing.

Maraschino Cherries: Gently fold chopped cherries into batter.
