Sick conspiracy theory spread online about Texas football star Austin Metcalf

The tragic death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf has not only shaken his Texas community but has also sparked a nationwide reaction filled with sorrow, confusion, and controversy. As details continue to emerge about the fatal stabbing that took place on April 2 at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, the story has become a lightning rod for speculation — and, increasingly, misinformation.

Austin, an honor student and athlete, was reportedly stabbed in the chest during a heated confrontation with another teen, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony. According to the Metcalf family, the boys had never met before the incident, which unfolded quickly and tragically. As police continue their investigation, the narrative around what really happened has become clouded by fake accounts, falsified reports, and a disturbing wave of conspiracy theories spreading across social media.

One of the most egregious falsehoods appeared online in the form of a fabricated medical examiner’s report. The fake document falsely claimed that Metcalf’s cause of death was an “MDMA drug overdose,” with the stab wound listed as secondary. Frisco Police were quick to debunk the post, issuing a public statement warning the community not to trust anything outside official sources. “At this time, the report has NOT been released. Therefore, any information currently found online is FALSE,” the department emphasized in a Facebook post.

The confusion didn’t end there. A fraudulent social media account impersonating Frisco Police Chief David Shilson claimed that Metcalf had initiated the confrontation by “sucker punching” Anthony and smashing his phone. That statement, also entirely fabricated, has since prompted a criminal investigation by both Frisco police and the FBI. Authorities are now working to identify the individuals behind these impersonations.

Chief Shilson urged the public to remain cautious. “Beware of those taking to social media to deliberately spread misinformation, hate, fear, and division,” he said, noting the damage such posts can cause during a time of immense grief and community tension.

Even the suspect’s family has fallen victim to online scams. At least one GoFundMe campaign claiming to support Anthony’s legal defense was flagged as fraudulent. In response, Anthony’s relatives issued a statement distancing themselves from fake pages and reaffirming their faith in a fair legal process. They described the online rumors as “false, unjust, and harmful.”

Despite that, a legitimate GiveSendGo campaign created by the Anthony family has raised nearly $200,000. The funds have been directed toward hiring two well-known Texas attorneys with experience in racially sensitive and high-profile cases. These lawyers previously helped secure a settlement in the infamous 2015 McKinney pool party incident, where a 14-year-old Black girl was forcibly detained by police.

“Karmelo, like all citizens of the United States, is entitled to a fair and impartial legal process,” attorneys Clark and Cole said in a joint statement. “We are committed to ensuring that Karmelo’s rights are indeed protected throughout each phase of the criminal justice system.”

As of now, Anthony remains in custody at the Collin County Jail, charged with first-degree murder. His bond is set at $1 million.

Meanwhile, local officials are working hard to refocus the conversation on the two families devastated by this tragedy. Frisco City Councilman Brian Livingston acknowledged the chaos playing out online but reassured the public that his community remains grounded.

“This is a much bigger deal on social media,” Livingston told the New York Post. “I don’t think social media represents the city of Frisco… We are a united community. It is taken seriously, but I think people are mostly concerned about the two families and focused on getting through this.”

In a time of deep sorrow, the city continues to grieve — even as it battles a digital storm of rumors and division. As investigations move forward and the truth begins to surface, what remains clear is the tragic loss of a promising young life, and the urgent need for compassion, clarity, and community over chaos.
