‘Love What He Stands For’: People Have Chosen Their Favorite Candidate for the Next Pope

Cardinal Tagle Was a Fan Favorite for Pope — But the Conclave Had Other Plans

As the Catholic Church transitions into a new era under Pope Leo XIV, many faithful around the world still hold affection for another prominent candidate — Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.

In a poll conducted by AmoMama Nostalgia, readers overwhelmingly chose Tagle — listed as “Number 2” — as their preferred successor to Pope Francis. Social media lit up with praise for the Filipino cardinal, with users citing his humility, relatability, and strong connection to the teachings of Pope Francis.

“Cardinal Tagle,” one user wrote simply. Another added, “Number 2 — his ideas are pretty much the same as Pope Francis. He could be a great Pope.”

A Pope in Spirit — But Not in Title

Known affectionately as “Chito,” Cardinal Tagle has long been admired for his pastoral approach and progressive values. He was repeatedly described by commenters as “humble,” “happy,” and “in touch with the people,” making him a spiritual favorite for many watching the Church’s future unfold.

“Cardinal Tagle, who is as humble and simple as Pope Francis, who is in touch with his flock,” one person commented. Another simply said, “Number 2!!! Love what he stands for.”

Tagle’s Rising Influence

At 67, Cardinal Tagle is still relatively young by Vatican standards. He currently heads the Dicastery for Evangelisation — a key position overseeing the Church’s global missionary efforts. His years as Archbishop of Manila and Bishop of Imus in the Philippines gave him hands-on experience in the third-largest Catholic country in the world.

Cardinal Tagle’s broad appeal stems from both his pastoral presence and academic pedigree. A former member of the Vatican’s International Theological Commission under Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI), he studied at the Catholic University of America and is fluent in several languages, including Italian, English, Spanish, and Tagalog.

Popularity Beyond the Vatican

Tagle’s following is strong among Catholics across Asia and beyond, especially younger generations. During Pope Francis’ 2015 visit to the Philippines, which Tagle helped host, one Mass drew a record-breaking seven million attendees — a testament to his reach and respect among the faithful.

Yet not everyone viewed him as an ideal papal candidate. Critics questioned whether five years in the Vatican bureaucracy gave him enough administrative experience to lead the global Church. Still, his theological insight, charisma, and personal humility have earned him admiration from both laypeople and clergy.

Political Controversies

His rising profile hasn’t been without friction. After his 2020 appointment to the Vatican, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte accused Tagle of political meddling. But the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines quickly defended him, calling the allegations “ludicrous.”

“He preferred to hitch rides with parishioners rather than own a car,” said Fr. Robert Reyes, a fellow seminary student, highlighting Tagle’s grounded lifestyle.

The Conclave’s Decision

Despite widespread support for Tagle, the College of Cardinals made a different historic choice on May 8, 2025: electing Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago as Pope Leo XIV — the first American pontiff in Church history.

Prevost’s selection was greeted with cheers in St. Peter’s Square as white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel. Addressing the crowd in Italian, he opened with, “Peace be with you,” and referenced the legacy of Pope Francis: “God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail.”

Pope Leo XIV: A Blend of Continuity and Change

Though American-born, Pope Leo XIV holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Peru, where he served for decades. He was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023 and led the Dicastery for Bishops before his election.

Theologically, Leo XIV is viewed as a centrist. He shares Francis’ emphasis on outreach and social justice, especially for migrants and the poor, but he maintains a conservative stance on doctrinal issues like the ordination of women.

What Cardinal Tagle’s Popularity Reveals

The strong support for Cardinal Tagle reflects a continued desire among many Catholics for a Church that is compassionate, open, and deeply rooted in service to others. His pastoral charisma, theological wisdom, and personal humility will likely continue to shape the Church, even outside the papacy.

While the conclave chose Pope Leo XIV, many hearts still quietly echo “Number 2.”
