Soldier dies on duty in Afghanistan – 2 days after the funeral, his wife opens his computer and finds a letter

A Soldier’s Final Letters: The Enduring Love of Captain Todd Weaver

In 2010, U.S. Army Captain Todd Weaver was killed by an IED during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. He was just 26 years old, a husband, a father, and a son. He left behind his wife, Emma, and their 9-month-old daughter, Kiley, who would grow up without memories of the father who adored her.

The Weaver family from Hampton, Virginia, was shattered by the loss. But just days after Todd’s funeral, Emma discovered a final act of love that would carry her through the darkest nights.

The Discovery

When Todd’s personal belongings arrived from Afghanistan, Emma hesitated to open his laptop. Two days later, she found the strength — and there, on the desktop, were two Word documents titled “Dear Emma” and “Dear Kiley.”

Her breath caught. Todd had written them in case he didn’t make it home.

The Letter to Emma

In the letter to his wife, Todd spoke with the same warmth and steadiness that had anchored their marriage.

“Although I may not be here right now, take comfort in the fact that I am watching over you,” he wrote.

He told her not to let grief consume her, but to keep living — to laugh again, love again, and find joy in the life they had begun together.

“Our time together was perfect. You made me happier than I ever thought I could be,” he continued. “Please don’t think that I left you alone. I’ll always be there in your heart.”

Todd reminded her that their daughter was his greatest gift, and asked her to stay strong for Kiley.

“Her smile and laughter represent all that is good and beautiful in this world,” he wrote.

He ended the letter with faith and hope — the same spirit that had carried him through war.

“Never be afraid to do what you need to do to be happy. Much better times are coming.”

The Letter to His Daughter

The second letter was even more tender. Addressed simply to “My Dear Kiley,” it was written for a little girl too young to read it — a message meant to guide her as she grew.

“You have such a bright and beautiful future ahead of you,” Todd began. “Remember that your Daddy will always be proud of you and will always love you.”

He told her to be kind, to work hard, and to take care of her mother. Then, in words that still move readers years later, he added:

“Always remember that even though I’m not there to hold your hand, I’ll be with you in your heart.”

A Legacy of Love

Those two letters — written in a war zone, left behind with quiet foresight — have since circled the world, shared as a testament to courage, devotion, and faith.

Emma has described them as “the most precious gift” her husband could have left — a bridge between life and eternity, love and loss.

Captain Todd Weaver’s words remain a reminder that true love doesn’t end with death. It continues — steady, unseen, and eternal — in the lives of those who remember.
