Every night, my brother’s new wife dragged her pillow into my room and insisted on sleeping in the middle of the bed, right between my husband and me. “I’m scared of the bad dreams,” she whispered. My husband told me to let it go. I thought she was crazy. I thought she wanted my husband. But on the 17th night, I woke up to a chilling CLICK in the dark. Chapter 5: The Line of Light

The light moved slowly across the floor.

It climbed the wall.

Then it stopped.

I held my breath.

Soft. Deliberate. Like a fingernail tapping against wood.

I turned toward Esteban. He was facing away from me, breathing slow and even.

Or so I thought.

Then Lucía shifted higher in the bed.
