Chapter 3: Clara’s Fear

Clara’s note said Gwen had never recovered after losing her own little girl years earlier. She had grown intensely attached to Emily, sending letters that called our daughter “the child I was meant to raise.”

I remembered Gwen being overly attentive, but Clara had hidden the most troubling letters because she hoped compassion and firm boundaries would be enough.

Then Clara learned Gwen had taken money from their widowed mother and forged Clara’s signature on property papers. Gwen begged her not to tell anyone. Clara agreed to visit in person, recover the documents, and persuade her sister to seek help.

“I don’t believe Gwen wants to hurt us,” Clara had written. “But grief and fear have made her unpredictable. If we do not return, show these letters to the police and ask about the old boathouse.”

Daniel called the county sheriff. A cold-case detective named Rosa Alvarez arrived that evening and read every page twice.

“The original investigation accepted Gwen’s statement without testing it,” she said. “If Clara wrote this before leaving, we have reason to reopen everything.”
