Chapter 4: Claire’s Confession
I agreed to one video call, with Noah beside me.
Claire appeared older, her hair threaded with gray. For several seconds, none of us spoke.
Then she said, “I abandoned my children, Daniel. I won’t insult you by calling it anything else.”
Before the beach trip, she had been hiding debts, severe anxiety, and months of sleeplessness. She had convinced herself that I would leave once I learned how badly she was struggling. A former coworker offered her a place in another state, and Claire made a desperate plan to disappear.
“I told myself the children would be safer with you,” she said. “That may explain what I was thinking, but it doesn’t excuse what I did.”
She had eventually received treatment and found steady work. Each year, shame made returning harder. She contacted Noah only after a counselor challenged her to stop confusing remorse with accountability.
My anger was real, but I refused to use it as a weapon.
“You don’t get to appear and ask six children to repair your conscience,” I said. “Any contact happens at their pace, with professional guidance. No surprises. No promises you can’t keep.”
