Chapter 5: A Different Offer
The next morning, I called our attorney and proposed a third option.
The shop would purchase the building at its independently appraised value, not the developer’s discounted price. I would make a substantial down payment, and Owen would carry the remaining balance through a legally secured five-year note. He would receive monthly income, plus enough cash immediately to address the most urgent medical debt.
There were conditions. Owen had to cancel the developer’s contract himself, cover the legal cost caused by his rushed agreement, and provide full written disclosure of any claim involving the property.
“You’d still buy it after what I did?” he asked.
“I’m not buying it to reward you. I’m buying it because the business can afford responsible terms, and because Mom wanted this place protected.”
Mara joined us by video call. She looked tired and embarrassed, but she did not make excuses for him.
“Owen should have told us both the truth,” she said. “If you offer this, we will honor every condition.”
Owen looked at me for a long moment. “I kept thinking asking for help would make me look weak.”
