Big-Voiced Metal Singer Dan Vasc Gives Amazing Grace A Disturbed-Like Makeover

Vasc studied both classical and contemporary singing, as well as piano, composition and music theory. He later taught singing and joined the metal group Fearless. Its first EP, “Ancient Wisdom,” arrived in 2013. The attention surrounding that release led producer Juan Aneiros to invite Vasc onto “The Omens Of Death,” the second concept LP to feature acclaimed actor Christopher Lee. Vasc appeared in the role of Oliver.

Fearless subsequently completed a debut album but was unable to interest a record label. By October 2017, Vasc was dealing with two difficulties: frustration over his stalled progress in the industry and grief following his father’s death from cancer. He chose to cultivate an audience directly on YouTube. That following grew enough over the next two years for him to feel confident issuing the Fearless record “Chronicles of Ancient Wisdom” without a label.

In 2021, Vasc released “All Hail Friday Night Tights” as the upbeat theme song for “Friday Night Tights,” a weekly online program. The track pays heavy metal tribute to cartoon themes from the 1980s. Three days after it came out, it stood at the top of Amazon’s All Styles charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Across Vasc’s YouTube output, 18 videos have exceeded one million views, while 10 songs have passed the two-million mark.

Because “Amazing Grace” holds an important place in pipe-band programs, bagpipers can be expected to know it particularly well. Two weeks before the source article appeared, Wayne Swindell posted his response to Vasc’s performance. Identifying himself as a Scottish bagpiper, he judged the rendition exceptionally outstanding, named it his favorite interpretation and said it made him cry.
