John Legend moves fans to tears with emotional performance of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” that perfectly captured the heartbreaking story of the reggae icon’s swansong

“Redemption Song” is regarded as one of Marley’s most personal and lasting works. He delivered a notable live version in Dortmund, Germany, on June 13, 1980. The performance was captured by the German television station Rockpalast, preserving a concert that marked the end of the Uprising tour and stood among Marley’s final appearances onstage.

The track also occupied a defining position in his recorded catalogue: it closed Uprising, the last studio album issued during Marley’s lifetime. He had been diagnosed with cancer in his toe in 1977. The disease ultimately led to his death in 1981.

Rita Marley later discussed the circumstances surrounding the album’s creation. She recalled that her husband was secretly suffering substantial pain while making Uprising and was grappling with his mortality. In her account, that awareness was especially evident in “Redemption Song.”
