Our counselor, Dr. Patel, gave us a rule that sounded almost too simple: ask before assuming. Daniel had to ask whether I wanted help, company, or privacy. I had to ask what he was feeling instead of translating every tired expression into rejection.

The practice was awkward. One morning, he hovered while I tried to button my coat with stiff fingers.

“Would you like help?” he asked.

My first instinct was to prove I could manage. Then I remembered that accepting help was a decision, not a defeat. “Yes, please.”

Another evening, I found him sitting alone in the dark. Old suspicion rose immediately, but I did not search his phone.

“Are you pulling away from me?” I asked.

“No,” he said. “I’m exhausted, and I feel guilty admitting it.”

We talked until midnight. He apologized again for misleading strangers and hiding the account. I apologized for testing him instead of confronting him. Forgiveness did not erase either choice; it allowed accountability to produce something better.

We also started a weekly ritual. On Sundays, beside the pancakes Daniel still burned, we each named one difficult truth and one reason for gratitude. Some weeks the truth outweighed the gratitude. We said both anyway.

My health improved slowly, though not neatly. More important, I stopped treating my former self as the only version worthy of love. The woman in Daniel’s photograph had been joyful, but she had not yet learned what I now knew: strength was not returning unchanged. Sometimes strength meant becoming honest enough to be seen as you were.
