On the day everything changed, I was drifting through those memories while mopping marble near the food court. A sharply dressed man rounded the corner, speaking loudly on his phone about refusing a two-million-dollar offer for his business. I rolled backward, struck him, and knocked the cup from his hand. Coffee soaked his jacket and trousers. I apologized so quickly the words tangled.

I promised dry-cleaning money I did not really have. His face tightened, then changed as he studied me. “Miss Lana?” he asked. No one had called me that in years. “It’s Jordan.” Beneath the expensive haircut and assured posture, I found the lonely boy who used to stack chairs. “Little Jordan?” I whispered. He laughed through tears. “Not little anymore.”

We hugged in the middle of the food court while strangers watched. Jordan said he had searched for me after the school closed. He remembered every apple, every homework session, and the safety of being treated as worth someone’s time. “You helped raise me,” he said. “You believed in me before I knew how.”

He told me a loving family had eventually adopted him. He had gone to college, built a company, then several more. Now he was married to Rebecca and had three children. Success had not erased his old questions; it had made him determined to answer them for others. He wiped coffee from his sleeve, smiled as if providence had arranged our collision, and leaned closer. “And guess what?” he said. “Rebecca and I have…”
