On the day everything changed, I was drifting through those memories while mopping marble near the food court. A sharply dressed man rounded the corner, speaking loudly on his phone about refusing a two-million-dollar offer for his business. I rolled backward, struck him, and knocked the cup from his hand. I promised dry-cleaning money I did not really have. His face tightened, then changed as he studied me. “Miss Lana?” he asked. We hugged in the middle of the food court while strangers watched. Jordan said he had searched for me after the school closed. He remembered every apple, every homework session, and the safety of being treated as worth someone’s time. “You helped raise me,” he said. “You believed in me before I knew how.”
