The Wedding Gift Box Was Empty—Then the Speakers Named My Brother

Before anyone could move, an automated voice came through the ballroom speakers. It congratulated James on reserving two flights and a luxury hotel package, then mentioned the payment connected to the booking. Every guest turned toward my 30-year-old brother, who stood beside the bar with his glass frozen halfway to his mouth.

James had volunteered to manage part of the wedding playlist from his phone. He had connected it to the ballroom’s sound system and apparently forgotten to disconnect it. The travel notification had exposed him more effectively than any accusation could have. I walked over slowly, with Joshua beside me, and asked, “James, did you take our envelopes?”

He looked at the floor before admitting he had used part of the money for a vacation deposit. He claimed the rest was still with him. Then resentment poured out. Mom and Dad had helped pay for my wedding, he said, while refusing his request for rent money. He called the stolen cash his “share,” as though our guests’ generosity belonged to him. Joshua quietly reminded him that he had stolen from us and from everyone who had written those cards.

Our mother, Elaine, stepped forward with tears in her eyes. She told James that feeling overlooked did not give him permission to punish his sister. Our father, Victor, ordered him to leave. James’s girlfriend whispered urgently to him, but he pulled away and walked out without apologizing. I slipped behind a curtain near the dance floor, wondering whether to end the reception. We skipped the cake cutting. Then our guests began approaching—offering replacement blessings, steady hands, and quiet presence.
