Elaine explained that they had refused his rent request because he had rejected every offer to make a budget and find steadier work. They had not abandoned him; they had stopped rescuing him from choices he would not confront. James listened without interrupting. Then he admitted that stealing the envelopes had not been desperation. It had been revenge disguised as fairness.

His apology was plain. He did not blame alcohol, jealousy, or our parents. He promised to repay the missing cash, cover the hotel’s security costs, and cooperate with the report. Joshua told him forgiveness could begin immediately, but trust would return only through consistent action. I agreed. James would not be welcome in our home unattended, and we would not lend him money.

He flinched at those boundaries, yet accepted them. Our parents offered to help him locate affordable counseling and employment services, but they refused to pay his debts. Before he left, James placed the first repayment installment on the table. I did not hug him. I did tell him I hoped he would become someone whose word felt safe again.
