Three months ago, my aunt called to say Elena had died from a heart condition. She had apparently dismissed symptoms for years because missing work meant losing income. I received the news with a numbness that frightened me, then excused it by telling myself we had grown apart. The truth was harsher: I had pushed her away and had become practiced at pretending it did not matter.

The church was overflowing at her funeral. Elderly women wept openly. Hotel workers stood beside office custodians still wearing their uniforms. People I had never met embraced me and spoke about Elena’s generosity. Again and again, they said she had talked about me with pride. Several mentioned sacrifices, but I assumed they meant the ordinary sacrifices of an older sister.

After the service, Aunt Rosa found me outside beneath a dull gray sky. Her face held grief and disappointment in equal measure. She said there was something Elena had never managed to make me hear.

“Your scholarships did not cover everything,” she explained. “Elena paid the rest.”

I rejected it immediately. Aunt Rosa calmly listed the night shifts, weekend hotel work, and jewelry Elena had sold. Tuition gaps, rent, textbooks, and even some of my first-year meals had come from her. I insisted Elena would have told me.

“She tried, Sofia,” my aunt said. “You would not let her finish.”

Then she placed a worn envelope in my trembling hands. Elena had asked her to give it to me if she never got another chance.
