After dinner, my aunt announced that it was time for cake. I reluctantly retrieved Vanessa’s box and noticed how strangely heavy it felt. Under the lid sat three glossy chocolate layers decorated with raspberries and delicate flowers. Across the top, Vanessa had written a birthday message and signed it with love.

I ignored the tightness in my chest and pressed the knife into the center.

It struck metal.

Everyone leaned closer as I separated the slice. A small velvet case emerged from the cake. Inside lay a silver bracelet I recognized instantly—my grandmother’s bracelet, promised to me before she died fifteen years earlier. It had vanished the night of her death, and our family had once suspected Vanessa of taking it. I had believed that story without ever asking for proof.

A folded note rested beneath it. Vanessa explained that Grandma had entrusted the bracelet to her that final night. Grandma feared the family would reject anything delivered through Vanessa, so she instructed her to keep it safe until my twenty-fifth birthday. By then, she believed I might understand that love was not limited to blood.

Linda sat down with tears in her eyes. Dad turned away and covered his face. Memories returned with painful clarity: Vanessa attending school events, bringing meals when I was ill, and remembering birthdays even after I stopped acknowledging her gifts.

Dad said she had never wanted recognition. She had only wanted a place in my life.

I grabbed my coat and ran into the cold. For the first time, I couldn’t tell whether I had lost Vanessa—or had driven away someone who had loved me all along.
