A few weeks ago, an official envelope marked urgent appeared in my mailbox. I left it unopened on the kitchen counter until the following evening. Something about the return address filled me with dread. When I finally tore it open, I learned that my stepmother had died. The next sentence made me sit down: she had left her house to me.

It was the same house I had been ordered to leave with one suitcase. I reread the property documents, searching for another beneficiary or some condition I had missed. Behind them was a second document. Every dollar of her savings had been placed in a protected education fund for my son, unavailable to him until his sixteenth birthday.

I cried at my kitchen table harder than I had cried in years. This woman had given me no comfort when I needed it most. She had never said she was proud of me, and she had never apologized. Yet her final decisions ensured that my son would have educational opportunities I had struggled to create for myself.

The inheritance did not erase what happened. It did, however, change the weight of the memory. I wondered whether guilt, love, or years of regret had moved her hand. The following morning, the estate attorney called. He said there was one more item—a sealed envelope in her desk bearing my name. He had not opened it. If I wanted it, I would have to return to the house.
