Elena looked older than the woman who had vanished from my guest room. She saw Jenna behind me and immediately lowered her eyes.

“I know I don’t deserve to come in,” she said.

“This is Jenna’s decision too,” I answered.

Jenna studied her, then opened the door wider. “You can speak. That doesn’t mean everything is forgiven.”

Elena told us Darren had panicked when Jenna’s health worsened. He feared officials would blame him for missed appointments and take Chloe away. Instead of asking for help, he drove across state lines, convincing Elena that my home would be a temporary refuge. Elena had planned to explain everything that morning, but Darren insisted they leave before anyone could question him.

Darren was cooperating with the investigation and had entered counseling too, but Elena did not use that to excuse either of them.

Jenna’s voice trembled. “You left my baby without knowing whether your mother could care for her.”

“Yes,” Elena said. “I was wrong.”

I wanted to pull my daughter close, but comfort without accountability would have repeated an old pattern. I told her trust would return slowly, if at all. She nodded.

Before leaving, Elena placed her disconnected phone on the table. “I’m done disappearing,” she said. This time, I wanted to believe her—but belief would have to be earned.
