I had barely sat down when Mom raised one hand. “Please wait,” she told the officiant. She walked down the aisle and sat beside me, still holding the documents. Aaron followed. The guests remained quiet while the three of us finally had the conversation we should have had before anyone entered that room.

Mom showed me an authorization attached to the property agreement. She had knowingly permitted Aaron to sign during the early closing. His debt was real, but the signature was not a forgery. Even so, Aaron admitted they had made a mistake by arranging such an enormous gift without asking whether I wanted the responsibility. “Love doesn’t excuse secrecy,” he said.

We agreed that the restaurant would not simply be handed to me. After the wedding, an attorney and accountant would review the purchase, debt, and ownership. If I accepted, I would contribute savings, repay a fair share, and earn my interest through work. Only after we reached that agreement did Mom ask whether I could stand beside her. I nodded. The ceremony resumed, quieter than planned but more honest, and I watched Aaron promise to love her without pretending our family had nothing left to learn.
