The school agreed to provide accessible breakfast and lunch support without requiring students to explain their circumstances in front of classmates.

I contributed what I could after Mom’s expenses were settled, but Annabelle insisted that the program include oversight, transparent accounting, and referrals to existing community resources. Compassion, she reminded me, worked best when paired with responsibility. The first donation came from Mom. It was only twenty dollars, folded inside a card. “This should buy a few cookies,” she wrote, “and remind somebody that they were expected today.”
