Abby sank into a kitchen chair. The first thing she said was not an excuse.

“Is Lena going to leave?”

I stepped in through the back door. “I will if nothing changes.”

Her eyes filled, but I did not rush to comfort her. Abby admitted that after Rosie’s father vanished, she had felt rejected, frightened, and trapped. Dating Preston let her pretend, for a few hours, that her old life still existed. Those hours kept stretching because coming home meant facing everything she feared she could not handle.

Her fear explained her behavior. It did not excuse it.

We called Mom and asked Samira to bring her home when the appointment ended. Mom cried when she realized that calling the situation temporary had allowed it to continue. She apologized for leaning on the child who complained least.

Preston came over that evening. Abby had told him I volunteered to babysit and that Mom was well enough to help. He looked genuinely ashamed. He also made one point clear: he wanted a relationship with Abby, but he would not participate in her neglecting Rosie to maintain it.

With Sandra’s guidance, we wrote a plan. Abby would contact the child-support office, apply for childcare assistance, seek part-time work, and attend a parenting support group. Dates required confirmed childcare and a return time. My answer could be no without debate.

For the first month, Abby was allowed no casual outings unless she arranged and paid for a sitter herself.

She signed the page, then looked at me. “I made your love for Rosie into a weapon.”

That confession did not repair everything, but it was the first honest brick.
