I retreated to the bridal room with Mark and my parents. Mom was crying. Dad kept pacing, furious at Tony, until I asked him to stop.

“What Tony said was wrong,” I told them. “But we need to admit where some of that anger began.”

Mom looked confused until Mark gently reminded her how often Tony had been compared with me. Dad sank into a chair. For years, they had called those comparisons motivation. From Tony’s side, they had sounded like proof that love had to be earned.

A knock came at the door. Tony stood in the hallway alone, with Father Michael several feet behind him. I did not invite Tony inside, but I agreed to listen from the doorway.

“I wasn’t planning to ruin anything,” Tony said. “But part of me wanted your happiness taken away. I hate that I became that person.”

I believed his shame, but remorse did not entitle him to immediate forgiveness or a seat at the ceremony.

“I love you,” I said. “But you cannot come back inside today. If we repair this, it will take honesty, counseling, and changed behavior—not promises made because you got caught.”

Tony nodded through tears. Before leaving, he handed Dad his basement key and said it was time to take responsibility for his life.
