Phil Collins Captured the Spirit of Post-Wall Berlin with a Historic “Another Day in Paradise” Performance

In March 2023, footage of “Another Day in Paradise” was uploaded to Collins’ official YouTube channel. It has since attracted roughly 105 million views, along with hundreds of thousands of likes. Although that upload has made the performance easy to watch digitally, the material is archival and was not newly recorded in high definition.

Many commenters emphasize Collins’ range of roles as a singer, songwriter, drummer and pianist. One viewer highlighted his ability to sing while playing drums or piano, praised both his songs and the quality of his live work, and described him as a legend. The footage has also prompted nostalgia for the less cluttered way major concerts from that period were presented.

Another viewer argued that concerts are no longer staged in the same manner and associated that perceived change with diminished humanity and soul in current music. A separate comment praised the natural appearance of the instruments, the images and the performance as a whole. More than three decades after the summer concert, audiences around the world still revisit Collins and his touring band at the Waldbühne, as well as the song’s compassionate social focus and the performance’s understated sincerity.
