Newton-John joined the band for two classics during the concert. In addition to the broken-heart duet, she sang “Islands in the Stream” with Gibb. Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers made that song a hit in 1983, although its writers were Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb.
Barry and Robin wrote “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart” after experiencing a period of estrangement. Their work on the composition during one afternoon helped reunite them. The Bee Gees later chose it to lead the singles from Trafalgar, issuing it on May 28, 1971.
Once the writing was finished, Barry and Robin contacted Maurice. All three brothers recorded the newly completed song that night, together with “Lonely.”
