Nene Royal Teams Up With Linkin Park on America’s Got Talent Before Winning Season 21

Before reaching the television contest, Royal had developed her musical skills in Phuket, Thailand. She started playing guitar at seven and learned largely on her own. She used internet videos as a guide, then relied on her ear to work out chords and guitar solos. Her early performing experience included appearances at street markets around Phuket. Royal later took on two positions in the youth rock group OZONE, serving as its lead vocalist as well as its guitarist.

Once the Linkin Park number had finished, Crews began revealing the final order. The musical group Hundred Fingers placed third, which left Royal and magician Geno Ploeger as the last two acts awaiting the decision. Crews then announced Royal as the Season 21 winner. Along with the championship, she received the competition’s $1 million grand prize. The result came directly after viewers had seen her play electric guitar and divide the vocals of “The Emptiness Machine” with Armstrong.

The finale pairing prompted immediate comments from music listeners online. One YouTube viewer emphasized the contrast between the singers, praising Armstrong’s voice and observing that Royal’s vocal tone fit the song well. Thai viewers also celebrated Royal’s opportunity to appear with Linkin Park. Another commenter said they had not imagined seeing a Thai performer play with the band and expressed the pride that people in Thailand felt for Royal.
