“I keep getting new challenges physically, and I get through it. I roll around in a wheelchair a lot, and it took some getting used to.”
Fox’s relationship with mobility has changed significantly in recent years.
Although he can still walk, he says he now avoids doing so regularly because falling has become increasingly dangerous.
Speaking to *The Times*, Fox reflected on the injuries he has suffered.
“And that’s [the point] where I break stuff, it’s absolutely incredible the stuff I broke. In a three-year period I broke my elbow, I broke my hand, I got a big infection in my hand and I almost lost my finger.”
Those experiences eventually changed how he approaches everyday movement.
“I take it easy now, I don’t walk that much anymore. I can walk but it’s not pretty and it’s a bit dangerous.”
Falls are a serious concern for many people living with Parkinson’s because the disease can affect balance, movement, coordination, and posture.
Fox has previously discussed how complications such as falls and choking can become greater threats as the disease progresses.
He once summarized the distinction bluntly:
“You don’t die from Parkinson’s. You die with Parkinson’s.”
His experiences have also led him to think more openly about his own mortality.
In an earlier interview, Fox admitted:
“I’ve been thinking about the mortality of it. … I’m not gonna be 80. I’m not gonna be 80.”
While promoting *Future Boy*, he addressed the subject again and explained how he hopes his eventual death will happen.
“There are not many people who have had Parkinson’s for 35 years.”
Then he described the peaceful ending he would prefer.
“I’d like to just not wake up one day. That’d be really cool. I don’t want it to be dramatic. I don’t want to trip over furniture, smash my head.”
Fox’s comments were not framed as giving up.
Instead, they reflected the same practical approach he has often brought to discussing Parkinson’s: acknowledging what the disease has taken from him without allowing it to become the only thing defining his life.
His attitude toward the condition has evolved over the decades.
After living with Parkinson’s for so long, he says it has simply become part of his everyday existence.
Speaking to *Entertainment Tonight*, Fox explained:
“After 35 years or something since I’ve been diagnosed, this is just my life and I don’t think about it much.”
His attention, he said, remains focused on what can still be accomplished through research.
“I’m thinking about what we’re going to do as a community to figure this out and find a cure – and short of a cure, [create] treatment centres that are really groundbreaking.”
That determination has defined much of Fox’s life since revealing his diagnosis publicly in 1998.
Rather than withdrawing from public view, he transformed his personal experience into advocacy.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation has become a major force in Parkinson’s research, funding studies and helping accelerate efforts to develop better treatments and understand how the disease progresses.
Fox has also continued receiving recognition for his broader contribution.
His advocacy has earned him major honors alongside the awards and acclaim he received during his acting career.
Yet his latest comments also reveal the reality behind that public optimism.
Parkinson’s is progressive.
Tasks that once came naturally have become more complicated.
Walking can be dangerous.
A fall can result in broken bones.
And each day can bring a new physical challenge that requires adjustment.
Fox does not pretend otherwise.
What remains striking is the way he continues to speak about those realities without allowing fear to dominate the conversation.
He can acknowledge death while still talking about research.
He can discuss using a wheelchair while continuing to write books and make public appearances.
And he can admit that the future is uncertain while still focusing on what might be changed for the people diagnosed after him.
More than 35 years after learning he had Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox is still navigating new limitations.
But he is also still looking forward.
And when the end eventually comes, he has made one wish especially clear: he hopes it arrives quietly, peacefully, and without drama.
