Kyle Kennedy, granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, dies aged 42

At the time of the report, a cause of death had not been publicly announced. The local town clerk told PEOPLE that the cause remained pending.

Kyle was born in Washington, D.C., on July 6, 1984, into two prominent American families.

Her father, Michael Kennedy, was the sixth of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy’s 11 children. Her mother, Victoria Gifford, is the daughter of the late football star and broadcaster Frank Gifford.

As one of Robert and Ethel Kennedy’s 34 grandchildren, Kyle grew up surrounded by a family deeply associated with American politics and public service. But rather than pursuing a political career herself, she devoted much of her adult life to education.

After graduating from college, Kyle joined Teach For America and worked as a teacher in New York City.

She later continued her education at several prestigious institutions, earning degrees from Georgetown University, Pace University, and Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.

Her professional focus remained centered on children, particularly improving early childhood education and expanding opportunities for disadvantaged students.

But Kyle’s life also included profound personal challenges.

According to reports, she suffered a severe spinal cord injury in 2020 that left her paralyzed.

The injury dramatically changed her daily life and reportedly brought significant medical and physical challenges. Her obituary described the years that followed as difficult, but emphasized that Kyle continued to hold on to the sharp sense of humor and determination for which she was known.

Much of that determination was focused on her children.

Despite the complications she faced, Kyle devoted herself to raising her sons and also became an advocate for people living through similar circumstances.

The spinal injury was not the first devastating loss she had endured.

Kyle was only 13 years old when her father, Michael Kennedy, died in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado, on New Year’s Eve in 1997.

Years later, Kyle faced another unimaginable tragedy when she and her former husband, Liam Kerr, lost their infant daughter Josephine.

Josephine, the twin sister of their son Conor, died only days after her birth.

Kyle continued forward through those losses while raising her surviving children and building a career centered on helping others.

She is survived by her sons, Conor, 12, and Declan, 10.

Her surviving family also includes her former husband, Liam Kerr; her mother, Victoria Gifford; her brother, Michael; her sister, Rory; and several nieces and nephews.

While Kyle belonged to a family whose history has unfolded very publicly for generations, her own legacy was shaped largely away from cameras and political campaigns.

She was a teacher.

A mother.

An education advocate.

And, according to those remembering her, someone who continued to find humor and purpose even after circumstances dramatically changed the life she had known.

Her death at only 42 leaves behind two young sons and another deeply painful chapter for a family that has endured an extraordinary amount of loss across generations.
