Just a short distance away was a dark, fin-like shape rising above the surface.

And suddenly, the cheerful family photo became something much more unsettling.

Had a shark really been swimming only a few feet away while they stood there completely unaware?

The photograph first drew widespread attention in 2023 after it began circulating online.

Viewers quickly became divided.

Some were convinced the dark shape was a shark fin.

Others thought it might simply be a wave, a large fish, or another marine animal.

Now the image has begun circulating again, bringing the mystery to a new group of viewers.

What made the photograph even more intriguing was the timing.

On the same day the picture was taken, SES Chelsea had reportedly issued a warning about a shark sighting in the surrounding area.

The organization later shared the family’s photograph on Facebook.

According to SES Chelsea, a shark had reportedly been seen just offshore between Bonbeach and Chelsea.

Later, they received a message from a family who had visited nearby Carrum Beach earlier that morning.

The visit had apparently been the little girl’s first trip to the beach.

Her mother took several photographs to remember the occasion.

At the time, nobody noticed anything unusual in the water.

Only after the family returned home and reviewed the pictures did they spot the mysterious object behind the father and daughter.

That raised the obvious question.

Was the dark shape in their photograph the same shark that had reportedly been seen nearby?

The image quickly sparked debate.

Some people thought the resemblance to a shark fin was obvious.

Others were not convinced.

Several viewers pointed out how shallow the water appeared to be.

One commenter argued that if the object really belonged to a shark, the animal could not have been especially large because of the apparent depth of the water.

Another person questioned whether a shark with a fin that size could swim so close to shore without attracting the attention of nearby beachgoers.

Others agreed that a shark could not be completely ruled out, but believed it was unlikely.

If a large shark had been cruising through water that shallow, they argued, somebody nearby probably would have noticed.

That skepticism was later supported by an expert explanation.

The Victoria Fisheries Authority and Life Saving Victoria were reportedly unable to conclusively identify the object from the photograph alone.

However, Professor Charlie Huveneers, research leader of the Southern Shark Ecology Group, suggested that the shape was more likely to belong to a ray.

Because of the quality of the photograph, he could not be completely certain.

But he said the object did not strongly resemble the dorsal fin of a shark.

Instead, he believed it may have been the wing of a Southern Eagle Ray.

That explanation would fit the location.

Southern Eagle Rays can be found in southern Australian waters and are known to travel through shallow coastal areas.

When part of a ray’s wing rises above the surface, particularly when photographed from a distance, it can create a shape that looks surprisingly similar to a shark fin.

That could make the family’s photo far less frightening than it first appears.

Still, the shark theory was not completely unreasonable.

The picture had been taken on the same day as a reported shark sighting in the wider coastal area.

And only days later, another dramatic shark encounter made headlines elsewhere in Australia.

Near Aldinga Beach, south of Adelaide, fishermen reportedly filmed a large great white shark circling their boat.

The animal was estimated to be around 13 feet long.

That footage was much clearer and served as a reminder that large sharks do live in Australian coastal waters.

But not every dark shape in the ocean is a shark.

Blurry photographs can be extremely difficult to interpret accurately.

Waves, reflections, seaweed, fish, and other marine animals can combine to create misleading shapes.

Our brains also tend to lock onto familiar patterns once somebody suggests what we should be looking for.

Tell someone there is a shark in a photo, and suddenly an unclear dark shape can begin looking much more like a fin.

In this case, the available expert opinion leans toward a Southern Eagle Ray rather than a shark.

But the picture remains fascinating because of how normal the moment seemed when it was taken.

A father.

His daughter.

A first trip to the beach.

A quick family photograph.

And in the background, something nobody noticed until hours later.

Whether it was a ray or another harmless marine animal, the image is a striking reminder of how much can be happening around us without us realizing it.

Beachgoers should always pay attention to local warnings when sharks or other potentially dangerous marine animals are reported nearby.

But as for the mysterious shape behind this unsuspecting family, the most likely explanation appears to be much less terrifying than social media first imagined.

Probably not a shark.

Most likely a ray.

Still, once you notice that dark shape in the water, it is almost impossible not to look twice.
