Hollywood has always had a reputation for lifting stars to extraordinary heights before suddenly turning its attention elsewhere, and Locklear has experienced both sides of that reality.
In more recent years, much of the media coverage surrounding her has focused on reports involving alcohol, medication, legal trouble, and concerns about her well-being. But the difficult chapters in Locklear’s life began long before those stories appeared.
Long before fame arrived, Locklear struggled with her confidence.
Despite eventually becoming known as one of Hollywood’s great beauties, she once described herself as a shy girl with “bony elbows, acne, and braces.”
She wanted to become a cheerleader while attending high school, but she was reportedly considered too thin and physically weak.
It was quite different from the glamorous image millions would later associate with her.
At home, however, Locklear has spoken positively about her upbringing. She described her childhood as loving and has frequently praised the relationship between her parents.
Her mother worked as a production executive, while her father had served as a Marine Corps colonel.
“My father was a Marine colonel, very loving, but there’d be a look in his eyes when he was displeased,” Heather once told The New York Times.
Yet her teenage years were also touched by devastating family tragedy.
When Locklear was 16, her uncle died by suicide. Years later, in 1986, her 27-year-old cousin also took his own life.
The deaths deeply affected the family, and Locklear reportedly remained uncomfortable discussing the painful events even many years later.
None of that private heartbreak was visible to the millions of television viewers watching her rise to fame.
To much of the public, Locklear appeared to be the quintessential all-American television star — beautiful, successful, polished, and perhaps even surprisingly conventional considering the Hollywood world around her.
Her romantic life, however, would soon become considerably more colorful.
After becoming a major television star through “Dynasty,” Locklear found herself surrounded by actors, musicians, and some of Hollywood’s biggest emerging names.
One of those men was Tom Cruise.
Locklear later recalled spending an evening with Cruise after the two met through an audition during the early 1980s.
She didn’t exactly describe it as a serious romance. At the time, Cruise was still establishing himself in Hollywood and reportedly did not have many friends in the entertainment industry.
During their evening together, he apparently showed off some of the dance moves that would later become associated with “Risky Business.”
Locklear admitted she wasn’t quite sure how to respond.
“You just kind of stand there and don’t know what to do,” she recalled, adding, “Do you dance around him?”
Apparently not.
The evening did not lead to a lasting romance, and the pair did not continue dating.
Another familiar television heartthrob soon entered Locklear’s life.
Scott Baio became enormously popular during the 1980s, and Locklear was one of the women who caught his attention.
The two met in 1983 while appearing on “Battle of the Network Stars.”
Baio later admitted just how strongly he had felt about her.
“Heather Locklear was the first girl I was ever in love with,” he told People. “She is the greatest chick in the world, and I just ruined it.”
Their feelings were reportedly mutual, but the relationship eventually ended, with Baio later acknowledging his own difficulty with commitment.
Then there was Mark Harmon.
Before settling down with Pam Dawber, the future “NCIS” star was considered one of Hollywood’s most desirable bachelors.
His popularity was so significant that People named him Sexiest Man Alive in 1986.
Women clearly noticed him.
“Mark’s sensitivity shows through that handsome face, and women love that,” his “St. Elsewhere” co-star Cristina Pickles told People. “I don’t think he is fully aware of his effect on women.”
Actress Donna Mills was even more direct.
“Forget Mel Gibson,” she joked. “Whenever I see Mark, I think to myself, ‘Your place or mine?’”
Locklear had noticed Harmon as well.
The two reportedly had a brief romance around 1984, although according to Harmon, it disappeared almost as quickly as it began.
“It began around Christmas [1984] but was over by New Year’s,” he recalled, describing Heather as “just an emotional cup of coffee to me.”
Locklear’s next major romance would become much more serious.
In 1985, she began dating Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee after the pair met at an REO Speedwagon concert.
Lee’s wild rock-star reputation was almost the opposite of Locklear’s wholesome public image, and that contrast was apparently part of the attraction.
“He was a bad boy, and that image was exciting to me. Maybe it was my way of rebelling,” she later said.
The two married, beginning one of the most closely watched celebrity relationships of the era.
Despite the difficulties that developed between them, their marriage lasted for nearly eight years.
“I really loved Tommy – well, for a brief time,” Locklear later admitted. “I gave it my best.”
At the beginning, both apparently imagined they would remain together for the rest of their lives.
“I think we’ll be the coolest grandma and grandpa in the world,” Lee once told People. “We’ll be like 85 or 90; I’ll still be a rock pig, and Heather will still be gorgeous.”
Reality turned out differently.
The marriage ended in 1993.
But Locklear would soon fall in love with another rock musician.
Only about a year after her divorce from Lee, she became involved with Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora.
The pair reportedly met in New York while Locklear was there promoting “Melrose Place.”
Their relationship initially came with logistical difficulties. Sambora was based in New Jersey while Locklear lived in California, leaving them on opposite sides of the country.
Nevertheless, they made the long-distance relationship work.
In 1994, they married in a civil ceremony in New Jersey and later traveled to Paris for another celebration.
For Locklear, Sambora appeared to offer something considerably different from her previous marriage.
“He’s really grounded, really family oriented, and very close to his parents,” she said of Sambora in 1998. “Who I am as a person is really who Richie is as a person…. We mirror each other.”
Sambora had also experienced the excesses associated with rock-and-roll fame, but he later suggested that meeting Locklear changed everything for him.
“I had a great time dating women,” he said. “But the minute I met my wife, I knew I was done. That was it. I think the same thing happened to her.”
Locklear also said she approached her second marriage with a different mindset.
“I handled it so differently from my first marriage,” she explained in 1996.
“I told him, ‘This is who I am and this is what I want’.”
Despite their glamorous careers, the couple often described their private life as surprisingly normal.
They spent weekends at their home in Lake Arrowhead outside Los Angeles and apparently had little interest in constantly chasing Hollywood nightlife.
“We are very boring. We go out to dinner to the same three restaurants and eat the same things. We like to sit around and talk,” Locklear said.
People around them also believed their relationship was unusually strong.
“By all accounts, they were a perfect couple,” People senior editor Jamie Bufalino once said. “Many of their friends envied their relationship.”
In 1997, Locklear and Sambora welcomed their daughter, Ava.
Growing up with two famous parents meant Ava experienced a childhood unlike most other children. She occasionally appeared onstage during Bon Jovi concerts and sometimes introduced the musicians or danced with members of the band.
Despite growing up around enormous celebrity, Ava eventually established a life and identity of her own.
But while Heather and Richie seemed to have found lasting happiness, cracks eventually appeared in their marriage.
Rumors began circulating that the relationship was in trouble, with some reports claiming disagreements over whether to have another child were contributing to the tension.
In December 2005, however, the couple publicly denied that their marriage was collapsing.
“The real story is that there is no story. The truth is that after 11 years together, we are still happily married. Boring but true,” they said in a joint statement to the New York Daily News.
Only a few months later, everything changed.
Locklear filed for divorce after approximately eleven years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.
Even more surprisingly, Sambora initially appeared unaware that his wife had filed.
When reports of the divorce surfaced in February 2006, he reportedly dismissed them as “completely untrue” and said he was making Valentine’s Day plans with Locklear.
But the divorce filing was real.
As more details emerged, People reported that Locklear had discovered an email sent to Sambora by a woman they both knew. The message allegedly contained provocative photographs.
The discovery reportedly left Locklear “absolutely devastated.”
Sambora denied marital wrongdoing.
The drama surrounding the divorce became even more complicated when Locklear’s former friend Denise Richards entered the picture.
Not long after Locklear and Sambora separated, Richards and Sambora began dating.
Richards was going through her own extremely public divorce from Charlie Sheen at the time. Because Sheen and Locklear had worked together on “Spin City,” the couples had already known one another socially.
The new relationship inevitably generated rumors.
Some reports suggested Richards and Sambora might have become involved before his marriage ended, although Richards strongly denied breaking up the couple.
What was clear was that her relationship with Sambora severely damaged her friendship with Locklear.
“The thing with Heather, that’s been hard,” Richards told “Entertainment Tonight” in 2006. “You can’t help who you fall for and that friendship, unfortunately, was done and wasn’t salvageable.”
Richards also challenged the public perception that she had stolen the husband of a close friend.
She insisted that she and Locklear had never been best friends and maintained that her relationship with Sambora did not begin until both of them were navigating divorces.
“We were friends and we were both going through divorces, and that’s what drew us to each other … I did not steal someone’s husband. Did I date a former friend’s ex-husband? Yes. Did I break up a marriage? No,” Richards told Us Weekly.
Richards and Sambora eventually split in early 2007, although they remained friendly and briefly gave their romance another chance several years later.
Interestingly, time also appeared to soften much of the bitterness between Locklear and Sambora.
Despite the painful circumstances surrounding their divorce, the former spouses eventually developed a healthier relationship, helped in large part by their shared devotion to Ava.
Years later, Sambora spoke affectionately about his former wife.
“Time does heal old wounds. I mean, I still love Heather and I know she loves me. She’s the mother of my child, man. What can you say?” he explained.
Their bond gradually evolved into friendship.
They appeared together to support Ava at important moments, including when she walked in the White Trash Beautiful Spring 2011 fashion show. They also reportedly spent some holiday celebrations together.
“We’re very good. It’s actually even beyond for [our daughter’s] sake,” Sambora told “Access Hollywood” in 2012. “Heather and I really respect each other, and we’ve become better friends, I think, now that we’re not married.”
But while the relationship with her former husband improved, Locklear entered one of the most difficult periods of her life.
Beginning in the late 2000s, reports about her mental health, alcohol use, medication, treatment, and encounters with law enforcement increasingly overshadowed discussion of her acting career.
In 2008, emergency responders were sent to Locklear’s home after someone claiming to be her doctor contacted 911 because of concerns for her safety.
Her publicist later said the alarm had been false, while authorities reportedly treated the call seriously.
Not long afterward, Locklear checked into an Arizona medical facility for treatment involving anxiety and depression.
Over the following years, she reportedly entered treatment numerous times as concerns about addiction and her emotional well-being continued.
Her struggles became particularly public again in 2018 after an arrest involving allegations of domestic violence and battery against a police officer.
During that difficult period, Sambora reportedly stepped forward to help his former wife.
He arranged professional assistance and reportedly helped cover expenses so Locklear could stay in a long-term treatment facility with access to doctors and mental health professionals.
“I will of course always be there for Heather and especially Ava. I am very proud of my daughter for her composure and strength during this difficult time,” Sambora told the Daily Mail.
His comments showed how much their relationship had changed since the bitterness surrounding their divorce.
Whatever had happened between them as husband and wife, Sambora still considered Locklear family and wanted to support both her and their daughter.
In subsequent years, reports suggested that Locklear had become more stable and maintained sobriety for a significant period.
However, concern resurfaced in 2023 after photographs published by the New York Post showed her behaving in a way that some outlets described as unusual while she was in public.
The images immediately generated speculation about her health and whether she might once again be struggling.
But photographs taken during one moment can never tell an entire story, particularly when it comes to someone’s private health or recovery.
Locklear’s life has contained extraordinary highs and deeply difficult lows.
She became one of the defining television stars of her generation, appearing in hugely successful productions and building a level of fame that very few actors ever experience.
At the same time, her personal relationships, family tragedies, divorces, health struggles, and difficult periods played out beneath the relentless attention that comes with celebrity.
For fans who remember her from “Dynasty,” “T.J. Hooker,” and especially “Melrose Place,” Heather Locklear remains much more than the difficult headlines that followed her later in life.
She is an actress whose face became inseparable from an entire era of American television.
And after everything she has experienced, many longtime admirers continue to hope that the next chapter of her life is defined less by public scrutiny and more by peace, health, family, and happiness.
