It turns out the change was intentional, tied to his latest film role, one that required him to disappear into a character decades older than himself. Johnson, 54, was spotted filming in Brooklyn, New York, on a Tuesday, wearing a tan bucket hat and coat while sharing pizza with his young co-star.

A Role Unlike Any Other

The costume alone wasn’t what caught people’s eyes. Johnson appeared noticeably slimmer than the muscular action star fans are used to seeing, and the sight was enough to make some wonder if something was wrong.

The timing made the contrast even sharper. Johnson’s new look emerged just one day after he unveiled a poster for Jumanji: Open World, due in theaters this Christmas, showing him in his familiar hulking, action-hero form.

His Brooklyn appearance was for an entirely different project: Lizard Music, an adaptation of Daniel Pinkwater’s children’s novel. In it, Johnson plays Chicken Man, an eccentric elderly man who forms a bond with a young boy named Victor, played by Theo Clark Leber.

Speaking to Deadline at D23 in August 2026, Johnson explained that bringing the character to life wasn’t just about losing weight. It also meant five hours in the makeup chair every single day to convincingly appear as a man in his 70s.

“This is that thing that I ran towards and chased the challenge, and this was a challenge for me,” he said of taking on the part.

Fans React to the New Look

Once the Brooklyn set photos began circulating, reactions poured in fast. Many viewers said they struggled to connect the slimmer, older figure on screen with the Dwayne Johnson they knew.

“Wait is that really The Rock? if so the wardrobe and costume team need a raise cause damn,” one person wrote online, summing up the disbelief many felt scrolling through the images.

Not everyone focused on the makeup and wardrobe work, though. Some fans framed the transformation as a sign of real artistic risk-taking.

• “Imagine walking past The Rock on the street and not even realising it’s him. That transformation is genuinely impressive,” one commenter wrote.
• “Looks like hes finally putting his ego aside to do some actual acting, good for him,” another added.

Weight Loss, Not Illness

This isn’t the first time Johnson’s slimmer frame has sparked online concern. Back in September 2025, fans raised similar questions after seeing him appear notably leaner at the Venice International Film Festival.

At the time, Johnson addressed the speculation directly, explaining that he had lost nearly 30 pounds specifically to prepare for the Chicken Man role. He was clear that the change was deliberate and tied to the part, not connected to any illness.

At the Toronto Film Festival, Johnson said he was looking forward to taking on another physical transformation, following his earlier work on The Smashing Machine.

Cast and Production Details

For Lizard Music, Johnson is reuniting with director Benny Safdie, who also directed him in The Smashing Machine, the drama centered on MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Johnson has said it took Safdie only about 45 minutes to convince him to sign on for the new project.

The film’s cast extends well beyond its two leads. Alongside Johnson and Theo Clark Leber, Lizard Music features Alicia Silverstone, Regina Hall, and Andrew Dice Clay in live-action roles.

The voice cast adds even more star power, with Colman Domingo, Jeff Goldblum, Rachel McAdams, and David Krumholtz all set to lend their voices to the project.

As of now, Lizard Music does not have a confirmed release date, leaving fans to wonder when they’ll get a full look at Johnson’s unexpected transformation on the big screen.
