17-year-old Frank Raven mesmerises with piano rendition of Billy Idol classic “Rebel Yell” on The Voice UK semi-finals, before taking the song into a surprise direction with powerf

Billy Idol and guitarist Steve Stevens wrote “Rebel Yell,” the title song from Idol’s studio album released in 1983. In 1985, the track reached the British top 10. Known for aggressive guitar riffs and a sneering vocal style, it became a mainstream rock staple. Frank took the risk of moving that recognizable sound to the keyboard at the outset, then transforming the arrangement into a pounding rock number.

His version retained the original song’s defiance while giving it a contemporary and unconventional character. The performance also led Fletcher and Jones to what was characterized as their most difficult decision of the series. Since each coaching team could advance only a single act, they chose Frank rather than fellow team members Jack Algar and Ciiara Nyx.

That selection sent Frank into the grand final, where the other finalists were Monique Nicholson-Porter, Naná Aldrin-Quaye and Cate McHugh. Afterward, he said that letting himself go during the semi-final number had been extremely enjoyable, particularly in comparison with the quieter piano-based performances he had given at earlier stages of the contest.

Online, the uploaded rendition accumulated 107,000 views within a matter of days. One commenter focused on the expressions of the coaches who had not selected Frank in his blind audition, suggesting they now appeared to regret overlooking the 17-year-old. A second viewer, identifying themselves as 68, commended both his ability and the strong sense of self he displayed at his age, and urged him to remain unchanged.
