She continued:
“Then my father passed away when I was fourteen, and until I started working as an actress, we lived on seventy Marks a month. So I was very fortunate when I started acting.”
At first, acting was not even the dream.
Sommer wanted to study languages and reportedly hoped to become an interpreter.
Then a trip to Italy changed everything.
In 1958, while visiting the seaside resort of Viareggio, she was crowned “Miss Viareggio.”
Photographs of the striking young German woman began circulating.
They eventually caught the attention of famed Italian director Vittorio De Sica.
He encouraged her to come to Rome and helped open the door to the film industry.
Soon, Sommer was standing in front of a camera.
Her early European career gathered momentum quickly.
In 1959, German producer Artur Brauner signed her, and she appeared opposite Horst Buchholz in *The Death Ship*.
More roles followed.
But Hollywood remained the distant prize.
At the time, very few German actresses successfully made the leap into major American films.
Elke Sommer did.
Producer Pandro S. Berman cast her in *The Prize* opposite Paul Newman.
The 1963 film became a major turning point in her career.
Sommer’s performance earned her a Golden Globe as Most Promising Newcomer.
Suddenly, the young woman who had once milked cows to help her family survive was appearing beside some of the biggest stars in the world.
Then came the role that would permanently secure her place in Hollywood history.
In 1964, Sommer starred opposite Peter Sellers in *A Shot in the Dark*, the second film in the *Pink Panther* series.
She played Maria Gambrelli, the maid suspected of murder who becomes the focus of Inspector Clouseau’s affection.
The film became one of the defining comedies of the era.
Sommer was no longer merely an actress on the rise.
She had become a Hollywood star.
Throughout the 1960s, she appeared in one major production after another.
She starred with James Garner and Dick Van Dyke in *The Art of Love*.
She appeared with Bob Hope in *Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number!*
And in *The Wrecking Crew*, she worked alongside Dean Martin and Sharon Tate.
Her blonde hair, striking blue eyes, and glamorous screen presence made her one of the era’s most photographed actresses.
She was frequently described as a sex symbol.
But Sommer never seemed particularly interested in allowing that label to define her.
Looking back at the way Hollywood marketed her appearance, she once explained:
“My whole life, I have been directed, I have been produced, I spoke the lines written for the character.”
Her career extended far beyond a handful of glamorous roles.
Over the decades, Sommer accumulated close to 100 film and television credits, while also working in theater, music, and visual art.
As the years passed, painting became increasingly important to her.
By the 1990s, she had shifted much of her creative energy toward art, building another career away from the movie screen.
Yet for many fans, she remained inseparable from the elegant comedies and spy films of the 1960s.
Her personal life also contained deep love and loss.
Sommer was married to German hotelier Wolf Walther for more than three decades.
The couple had been together since the late 1980s and married in 1993.
Walther died in July 2026 at the age of 77 following a long illness.
His death reportedly devastated Sommer.
According to *Bild*, she had described him affectionately as her “Papa Bear,” and friends said she struggled deeply after losing him.
Just months later, Sommer died at her Bel Air home.
Her life had taken her from wartime Germany to Rome, from European films to Hollywood premieres, and eventually into the company of some of cinema’s most famous names.
She had survived poverty.
She had reinvented herself internationally.
She had built careers in both acting and painting.
And she became one of the relatively few German performers of her generation to achieve genuine Hollywood stardom.
The image of Elke Sommer that remains is glamorous.
But behind that glamour was a woman whose life had started with hardship and uncertainty.
She once described herself as extraordinarily fortunate to have found acting.
And perhaps that is what makes her story so remarkable.
She began with very little.
Then one unexpected trip to Italy opened a door.
From there, she walked all the way to Hollywood.
Elke Sommer was 85.
Her films remain, along with the memory of a star who helped define an era.
May she rest in peace.
