Adam Lambert’s Iconic Performance of “Believe” Leaves Cher in Tears

Despite those nerves, Lambert regarded singing one of Cher’s songs as an honour because he considered her among the most iconic singers ever. His appreciation of her work went back to his high-school graduation period, when he was a fan of her music. Her 1998 album “Believe” ranked among his favourites.

Cyndi Lauper provided another surprise during the honors. She had told Cher that she would be out of town, but appeared and performed “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Lauper then joined Lambert for a duet on “I Got You Babe,” which closed the show.

Lambert had previously performed another televised tribute to a major musical figure. On the TV program “Greatest Hits” in 2016, he honored George Michael by singing the 1987 song “Faith.” Fans responded enthusiastically to both that appearance and his later interpretation of “Believe,” prompting some to call him one of his generation’s best vocalists.

Cher shared the 2018 honoree group with country star Reba McEntire, jazz composer Wayne Shorter and Philip Glass. Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team from “Hamilton” were also recognized at the ceremony.
