‘Who Are You?’ I Asked the Stranger in My Bed, and He Said, ‘Your Husband’

One day, I received a strange phone call from someone claiming to be my grandfather. I was skeptical because, as far as I knew, I didn’t have any living family. My mom had passed away from cancer years ago, and my maternal grandparents died when she was young. I never knew my father because he disappeared when he found out my mom was pregnant with me, which left me with a deep mistrust of men.

Despite my doubts, the stranger insisted that he was my grandfather and that he had found me through a DNA testing kit. I had taken the test out of curiosity about my medical history, never expecting to discover new family members. He lived in another town and offered to pay for my plane ticket so we could meet. When I arrived, he introduced himself as Zachary Gaines, my grandfather.

I didn’t waste time with pleasantries. I immediately asked him why my father had abandoned my mom when she was pregnant. My grandfather sighed and explained that my father, Peter, hadn’t abandoned us. Peter had gone on a business trip and returned with news that he had fallen in love and was planning to get married. But before he could tell his family more, he died in a car accident. His phone was destroyed in the crash, and with it, all connections to my mother. My grandfather had no way of finding us.

As I listened to Zachary’s stories about my father, a part of me began to feel a connection to this family I never knew. He even offered me a job at his publishing company, and I eagerly accepted, excited to finally have a family after being alone for so long. As time passed, Zachary’s health began to decline, and we hired Mary, a live-in caretaker, to help take care of him. Mary introduced me to her friend, Alex, and we quickly fell in love. Our relationship was intense, and within a month, we were married. My grandfather, despite his illness, walked me down the aisle.

I was worried about Zachary’s health, but Alex was always supportive, spending a lot of time at my grandfather’s house to help out. We all became very close, and I thought I had finally found the perfect family. One evening, after leaving work, I spoke to Alex, who was at my grandfather’s house. I told him I was going home to rest, and he said he might stay longer and told me not to wait up. When I got home, I noticed a strange pair of shoes at the entrance but didn’t think much of it. Exhausted, I went to bed and lay down next to what I thought was my husband.

As I cuddled with him, he turned around, and to my horror, I realized it wasn’t Alex. Startled, I jumped up and demanded to know who he was. The stranger calmly told me that he was Alex Cherry, my husband—technically. Confused and scared, I threatened to call the police, but he told me I couldn’t unless I wanted to be arrested for living in his house illegally. He then revealed the shocking truth: his brother Todd had been using his identity for months, pretending to be him.

Alex explained that he had gone on a business trip to Africa and only discovered what had happened when he hired a private detective to find his brother. He showed me photos of himself and Todd as kids, along with Todd’s mug shot and records of his criminal activities. Todd had been disowned by their parents due to his constant troublemaking and had since committed several crimes, including identity theft. He was now conspiring with Mary to swindle my grandfather out of his company, and marrying me was part of their plan.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, I told Alex that Todd and Mary were at my grandfather’s house. Alex reassured me that the police were already on their way, as he had called them as soon as he arrived in town. We rushed to my grandfather’s house, where Todd and Mary were arrested right on the front lawn for their crimes, including identity theft.

Fortunately, my grandfather recovered from his illness, and the courts granted me an annulment from my fake marriage. As time passed, I grew closer to the real Alex. After healing from the betrayal, we started dating, and eventually, our relationship led to a real marriage.
