The Night before Our Wedding, My Fiancé Sent Me a Bouquet with a Note That Said ‘I Don’t’

The night before my wedding, I received an unexpected surprise from Mark—a huge bouquet of roses. It seemed like a sweet, romantic gesture. But the note that came with it was far from what I anticipated.

At 35, Mark had been the center of my life for six years. We met through mutual friends, fell in love, and built a steady, reliable relationship. Mark wasn’t known for grand romantic gestures, but he was dependable, and that’s what mattered most.

We had spent over a year planning our wedding, and everything seemed to be falling into place. That night, I was at the hotel with my bridesmaids, doing all the usual pre-wedding activities—laughing, sipping wine, and obsessing over the seating chart for the millionth time. The excitement was building. Then, just before 10 p.m., there was a knock at the door.

A hotel staff member stood there, holding a beautiful bouquet of red roses. I smiled, assuming it was from Mark.

“Looks like someone’s breaking the rules,” Kelly, my maid of honor, teased. We had agreed not to see or contact each other before the wedding, but I figured Mark couldn’t resist sending a little something special.

I reached for the note, expecting a sweet message like, “Can’t wait to marry you” or “Tomorrow will be perfect.” But instead, the note simply said, “I don’t.”

I froze, staring at the words in disbelief. My mind refused to process what was happening. Kelly grabbed the note, her eyes widening as she read it. “What does this mean?” she asked, her voice rising.

I felt a wave of panic rise within me. Was this some kind of sick joke? I called Mark immediately. No answer. I called again, then again, and eventually got sent to voicemail. My heart was racing, my hands shaking. How could everything go from perfect to this in an instant?

As the hours passed, I became more frantic. My bridesmaids tried to reassure me, suggesting it could be a misunderstanding or a cruel prank. But deep down, I feared the worst. I had to confront Mark in person, so I decided to drive over to his apartment.

Kelly insisted on coming with me, and the drive there felt like an eternity. When we arrived, Mark’s car was outside, confirming he was home. I banged on his door until he finally opened it, looking confused and groggy. His brother, Eric, was standing behind him.

I shoved the note at Mark, my voice trembling as I asked, “What is this?” Mark read the note, his face filled with confusion. “I didn’t send this,” he insisted. “I have no idea where this came from.”

Eric tried to calm the situation, suggesting it might be a cruel prank, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Mark swore he hadn’t sent the flowers or the note, and I was left wondering who could’ve done such a thing.

The next morning, as I was getting ready for the ceremony, Eric knocked on my door. His expression was serious, and I could sense something was wrong. He admitted that he had sent the flowers and the note. My heart dropped.

“I’ve been in love with you for years,” Eric confessed. “I thought maybe if you saw that Mark wasn’t right for you, you’d realize I was the one.”

I was stunned, struggling to comprehend what I had just heard. Eric, my future brother-in-law, had deliberately tried to sabotage my wedding because of his own feelings. I told him to leave, shaken by the betrayal.

When Mark came to pick me up for the wedding, I knew I couldn’t keep this from him. I explained everything—how Eric had sent the note and confessed his feelings. Mark’s face darkened with anger. Without hesitation, he confronted Eric at the venue and made it clear that he was no longer welcome.

Despite the turmoil, Mark and I went through with the wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony, but I couldn’t stop thinking about how close we had come to losing it all. After the vows, Mark held me close and reassured me that nothing would ever come between us again.
