Girl, 4, Dies during Hurricane Helene: Heartbreaking Details

A heartbreaking incident occurred in North Carolina as Hurricane Helene swept through the region, claiming the life of a 4-year-old girl named Luna Jade Gaddis. The devastating storm brought heavy rains and treacherous conditions, leading to a tragic car crash on September 26.

The fatal accident took place on Boggs Road near Hunsucker Drive around 8:10 a.m., where Luna was a passenger in a GMC Acadia driven by her mother, Lyndsey Nicole Gaddis. Due to the challenging weather conditions caused by the hurricane, the vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a GMC Yukon. Luna tragically lost her life in the crash, while her mother sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A 12-year-old passenger in their vehicle was critically injured and is currently hospitalized.

The driver of the GMC Yukon, Tiffany Miner Sipe, 34, from Claremont, also sustained injuries, though they were not considered serious. Two young passengers in Sipe’s vehicle—a 2-year-old and another 4-year-old—were hurt in the accident, with the younger child suffering more severe harm.

Trooper Christopher Casey from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed that impairment was not a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation, and potential charges are being reviewed by the Catawba County District Attorney’s Office.

Luna’s passing is one of several fatalities tied to the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene, which claimed multiple lives across the Southeast, including at least 15 in Georgia.

Luna’s family and community have been deeply affected by her tragic death. Her grandmother, Elizabeth Gaddis, described Luna as a “gift from God,” known for her infectious smile and warm hugs. “Her smile could light up a room, and she gave the best hugs,” Elizabeth shared in a heartfelt statement, expressing gratitude for the brief but meaningful time they had with her.

Luna was remembered as a joyful child who loved spending time outdoors with her brother, adored pageants, and cherished her dog, Nika. Her funeral service is scheduled for October 3, 2024, at Welcome Baptist Church in Catawba, where family and friends will come together to honor her memory.

Luna’s maternal grandmother, Crystal Flynn, and others have shared their grief on social media. The outpouring of love and support reflects how much Luna touched those around her. Heartfelt messages have been posted, with many offering prayers and words of comfort to the grieving family.

In this time of immense sorrow, our thoughts are with Luna’s family. May they find solace in the cherished memories and the love they shared with her.
