Joy Behar Waited 29 Years to Marry Retired School Teacher 7 Years Younger than Her

Joy Behar found love again after her first marriage ended, but she waited nearly three decades before marrying her current husband, who is a few years younger than her. In a candid interview, Behar shared the surprising topic that leads to most arguments in their relationship.

Born on October 7, 1942, Joy Behar recently turned 82. She has been a longtime co-host of the daytime talk show, “The View,” which she joined as one of the original panelists in 1997. Although she was briefly let go in 2013, she returned in 2015, later admitting that she was “glad to be fired” as she had grown tired of the show for reasons she couldn’t remember. When discussing her departure, she said that even the network couldn’t pinpoint why they removed her, calling the decision “very stupid” but adding that the network had learned their lesson.

Since her return, Behar has remained a central figure on the popular show and has expressed no plans to retire anytime soon. She signed a contract extension and shared in an October 2022 interview that she still enjoyed her role and was happy to be part of such a successful program. While Behar celebrated her 81st birthday on “The View” in 2023, she downplayed the significance of the day, humorously stating that she was just grateful to be alive at her age.

In addition to her successful career, Behar is happily married to Steve Janowitz, a retired schoolteacher. The couple wed in August 2011 after being together for 29 years. For their intimate ceremony, Behar and Janowitz wore matching black outfits. Despite their long relationship, Behar has revealed that they don’t argue much, except about one thing: the car.

During a May 2024 episode of the “Behind the Table” podcast, Behar shared that their biggest arguments revolve around driving. Janowitz, who has autoimmune issues, often acts as a backseat driver, constantly criticizing her driving. Behar admitted that his comments have made her a nervous driver. She even recalled a humorous incident where she accidentally crashed into a farm stand because she forgot to take the car out of drive. The couple recently traveled to Italy for ten days, which Behar joked was “too much closeness,” and upon their return, tensions resurfaced when Janowitz refused to get into her car for a lunch outing, leading to more driving-related bickering.

Despite these small disputes, Behar and Janowitz maintain a strong bond, built on humor and mutual respect. Behar has often shared the secret to their long-lasting relationship, attributing it to their thick skin and ability to not take things personally. Early in their relationship, she even kept the fact that she was a comedian from him, fearing it might scare him off.

Behar was previously married to television director Joseph Behar from 1965 to 1981, with whom she shares her only child, daughter Eve Behar, born in November 1970. Eve is now a mother herself, and Joy Behar is a proud grandmother to her grandson, Luca. Eve, who creates one-of-a-kind handmade ceramics, frequently shares glimpses of her family life on social media. In August 2023, she posted photos from an art opening, featuring her parents and son, now a teenager, beaming alongside her.

While Joy Behar continues to thrive both personally and professionally, her marriage to Janowitz, despite its occasional bumps, remains a source of love and humor in her life. Their long-lasting bond, based on years of understanding and shared laughter, keeps them strong amidst the demands of Behar’s high-profile career.
