Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, made a rare public appearance on October 1, 2024, to celebrate his 100th birthday. Surrounded by close family and friends in his beloved hometown of Plains, Georgia, the occasion was both heartwarming and concerning for many, as the former president’s frailty was evident.
A video shared by CBS Texas captured Carter being wheeled outdoors by an aide, wrapped in a blanket and wearing a blue cap. Despite his delicate state, Carter seemed peaceful as he enjoyed the sunshine and fresh air in the company of loved ones. The gathering took place in his backyard, where members of his family and his Secret Service detail gathered to watch a military flyover in honor of the milestone. Four jets soared past Carter’s home, creating a memorable moment for all in attendance.
Family members, seated under the shade of trees, captured the moment on their phones, savoring the rare sight of Carter enjoying the outdoors. While his appearance delighted many, it also sparked mixed reactions online.
Some expressed sadness and discomfort at seeing the former president in such a vulnerable condition. One user commented, “Sad to see him so frail,” while another wrote, “Give the man some dignity… trotting him out like this is just sad.” Others expressed concern over Carter’s state, with one person saying, “Kinda wish I hadn’t seen that. Love the man for sure. Not sure he’s still here, you know?”
However, many were touched by the celebration, viewing it as a fitting tribute to Carter’s life and legacy. “BLESSED Omg that’s awesome [sic],” one person commented, while another added, “It is really a beautiful thing to have done for him. I think he will make it to election day.”
In addition to the personal celebrations, the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park released a special commemorative passport stamp to honor Carter’s centennial. The park invited the public to collect the stamp in person or print it online as a way to commemorate the occasion.
As public celebrations took place, Carter’s family reflected on his health. In a September 2024 interview with Southern Living, Jason Carter, Jimmy’s eldest grandson, shared insights into his grandfather’s fluctuating condition. Jason noted that while the former president continued to experience life as best he could, his health had declined since the passing of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, in November 2023.
According to Jason, Jimmy was not always awake when family members visited, and his condition varied from day to day. Despite these challenges, the Carter family remained close, cherishing the time they could spend together as they navigated the complexities of his health.
