Stay strong! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Obama family for their tragic loss

Marian Robinson, mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, passed away peacefully on Friday morning at the age of 86. Known for her steady presence as the “first grandmother” during Barack Obama’s presidency, Robinson played a key role in the Obama family’s life at the White House.

In a heartfelt statement, the family shared, “As a mother, she was our backstop, a calm and nonjudgmental witness to our triumphs and stumbles.” Michelle Obama also honored her mother’s memory, tweeting, “Always there for whatever I needed,” reflecting on the unyielding support her mother provided throughout her life.

Robinson was especially known for her deep dedication to her grandchildren, Sasha and Malia. Though she often joined family events, she cherished the quiet of her personal space, preferring a life of privacy despite her proximity to the public spotlight. “She relished her role as a grandmother… just as she doted on Avery, Leslie, Austin, and Aaron,” the family statement read, highlighting her love and devotion to all of her grandchildren.

Tributes poured in from public figures and friends. Tennis legend Billie Jean King and others expressed their condolences, while Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda recalled her comforting smile during a White House performance in 2009, a testament to the warmth she shared with all who met her.

Robinson will be remembered not only for her role in the Obama family’s public life but also for her steadfast wisdom, love, and devotion to her family.
