Johnny Carson found himself in a difficult situation and looked to the audience for support when his musical guest was unable to make an appearance on the Tonight Show. The classical pianist Horito Gutierrez was unable to attend tonight due to an unintentional hand closure in a car door. Is there anyone here who can play the piano?
At that point, David Tolley put up his hand and offered to take the stage and perform. The audience was captivated by his flip-flop-clad rendition of “Memory” from the Cats musical!
Although Johnny acknowledged that the entire situation might have been a “turkey shoot,” he was pleasantly surprised and invited Tolley to return to his show.
After performing at the White House and writing music for Disneyland Paris, Tolley went on to have a prosperous career as a music professor at Delaware State University. “I would have been terrified if I knew 28 million people were watching every note I played, lol,” Tolley remarked about the experience. I don’t know exactly how, but it did change my life. It occasionally added a lot of excitement to my life.
It’s incredible how life can sometimes take unexpected turns!
