They Took One Last Picture—No One Knew It Would Be Their Final Goodbye

A happy family is shown in an unsettling photo shortly before they are killed in a helicopter accident.

The tragic helicopter crash in the Hudson River in New York on Thursday, April 10 claimed the lives of Siemens Mobility senior executive Agustin Escobar, his wife, and their three children.

According to reports, the family arrived from Barcelona, Spain, earlier that day and boarded a tour flight. Tragic things happened soon after.

Witnesses reported that the Bell 206 appeared to lose its rotors before plummeting into the water near Pier 40 in Manhattan. According to the FDNY, the collision happened in New Jersey near the Hoboken border at approximately 3:15 PM.

The pilot, whose name has not been revealed, was also killed in the incident.

Heartbreaking photos of Escobar, his wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three kids smiling in front of the plane can be found on the New York Helicopter Tours website. Just before the collision, they can be seen buckled up in their seats in another picture.

Officials say the helicopter broke apart in midair and nosedived into the river. At the scene, four of the six passengers perished.

The other two died from their injuries after being admitted to the hospital. To find out what caused the catastrophic crash, investigations are still being conducted.

Escobar, who was recently named Global CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, brought 25 years of international experience to the role, according to his LinkedIn page.

He has previously managed companies in the US, South America, Germany, and Spain. Before his most recent position, he spent two years as CEO of Siemens Spain.

Escobar’s efforts were “key to Siemens’ success in the field of mobility and transport,” according to his predecessor Miguel Ángel López, who was appointed to that position by Siemens.

His wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, was also a key figure in leadership. According to the New York Post, she worked for Siemens Energy for seven years as a global commercialization manager in Barcelona.

The three children, who were all thought to be middle school age or younger, were described by family members as content and close.

According to Juan Ignacio Diaz, a longtime friend and former Siemens coworker, “He was such a great person – kind, steady, and always there when you needed him.” “He was a trustworthy friend who was always there for you.”

Diaz recalled how Escobar balanced a demanding work schedule with a steadfast dedication to his family.

He always maintained his composure and composure no matter how difficult things got. Diaz remarked, “He had this way of making things feel okay even when they weren’t.” And he never lost sight of what was most important: his family.

He was completely devoted to his wife and children, Diaz continued. He was a fun, loving, and all-around awesome father. He and his family will be missed. I cherish you, friend.

The tragedy also garnered international attention, and in a heartfelt letter published on X, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences for the family’s loss.

“The news reaching us today of the helicopter crash in the Hudson River is devastating,” Sánchez posted. “Five Spaniards from the same family, three of them children, and the pilot have lost their lives.”

“An unimaginable tragedy. I share in the grief of the victims’ loved ones at this heartbreaking time,” he added.

All those impacted by this tragedy are in our thoughts.
