Tragic update: Missing 6-year-old found deceased in Mississippi

The small town of Saucier, Mississippi, is grappling with shock and grief following the disappearance and tragic death of 6-year-old Gracelyn Vick on Sunday afternoon.

According to family reports, Gracelyn had gone out to play in her yard around noon but failed to return. When hours passed without any sign of her, her concerned family contacted authorities. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office quickly mobilized an urgent search operation, assisted by nearby law enforcement, Gulf Coast Search and Rescue, helicopters, drones, and approximately 40 local volunteers.

Heartbreakingly, Gracelyn’s body was found later that evening near her family’s property. Law enforcement officers cordoned off sections of the family’s land, including areas around a swing set and livestock enclosures, meticulously gathering evidence throughout the night. Gracelyn’s body was transported from the scene around 8 p.m., as reported by WLOX.

Sheriff Matt Haley addressed widespread online rumors on Monday, emphasizing that no arrests had yet been made. “It’s too early to determine if foul play is involved,” Haley clarified, stressing the ongoing nature of the investigation. An autopsy was scheduled at the state crime lab in Biloxi to establish the cause of death.

The loss of Gracelyn has sparked a profound outpouring of support and sympathy online and within the local community. Grief counselors were made available at Saucier Elementary to help students navigate their sadness over the loss of their beloved classmate.

The tragedy is particularly devastating for Gracelyn’s mother, Vicky Lynn Hutcherson, marking the third heartbreaking loss of a child in recent years. Just last year, in March 2024, Vicky’s 13-year-old stepdaughter, Victoria Hutcherson, died tragically in a traffic collision on U.S. 49. Previously, in July 2021, the family suffered another profound loss when Gracelyn’s brother, 18-year-old Larry Hart, passed away due to a medical condition.

The community remains united in grief, expressing hope that authorities can swiftly and thoroughly uncover the truth behind this heartbreaking event. In the meantime, they continue to offer prayers and support to the grieving family, cherishing the memory of young Gracelyn Vick.
