Online user finds creepy object hanging from ceiling

A Reddit post from April 15 has gone viral after an eerie photo showing something dangling from a ceiling sent users into a flurry of speculation, jokes, and straight-up panic. The image, posted by a user named Takuraiii_ in the subreddit “What is it?”, captured a dark, string-like object poking out from a small gap in a ceiling panel. The casual caption—“Noticed this sticking out from my ceiling – what is it?”—did nothing to soften the creep factor. Especially after the original poster added that the object “moves so it’s probably not dead.”

The internet immediately went into overdrive. The post gained more than 35,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments, with Redditors offering guesses that ranged from reasonable to ridiculous. One commenter, leaning into humor, joked they were a “rat expert” whose credentials included watching An American Tail six times. “We’re not just dealing with any rodent. We’re dealing with a professional,” they quipped. Another said, “That’s a NYC kinda rat that will fight you over dinner.”

Others were less comedic and more imaginative. Some guessed it was a possum. A few went wild, tossing out armadillo or “giant wall lizard.” One user even floated the idea of a “tampon pull string,” which made for a bizarre mental image, if nothing else.

The thread quickly spiraled into absurdity. People suggested “tickling it,” “pushing it back up,” or simply “licking it.” One user advised, “Poke it with a stick and lick the stick instead.” As the object continued to move and wiggle, the situation took on a new level of urgency for viewers. One person summed it up by saying, “I would simply burn the house down.” Another added, “Hopefully you can now move out and sell the house before that stank arrives in force.”

Eventually, the mystery was solved. The original poster returned with an update: “After a heck-ton of comments saying that it’s a rat’s tail, I can now confirm that it is a rat’s tail…I’ll be calling an exterminator soon to properly deal with the situation.” They added, “Someone from the comments quoted ‘When there is one, there is a hundred you can’t see.’ God, I hope not.”

That quote isn’t just internet hyperbole. According to PBS Nature, rats are extremely social and tend to live in groups. One tail is rarely the only sign. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also warns that rats and mice carry several dangerous diseases that can spread to humans—some directly, through droppings or urine, and others indirectly through fleas and ticks. The danger isn’t just hypothetical. In early 2025, Betsy Arakawa, wife of actor Gene Hackman, died from complications related to hantavirus, which can be transmitted by rodent droppings and urine.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that signs of infestation may include droppings, stale smells, shredded nesting material, or chewed holes in walls and food packaging. Sometimes, as in this Reddit case, the first sign is a tail dropping in for a surprise cameo.

While Reddit had a field day with the ceiling mystery, the post also served as an uncomfortable reminder: pests often make themselves at home without anyone realizing—until it’s too late. One Reddit user probably said it best: “It’s just out of sight. It’s definitely not gone.”
