On June 14, former President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a rare joint appearance during a military parade in Washington, D.C., which immediately attracted attention. And not only for the patriotic fanfare, but also for a touching moment that was captured on film.

In addition to commemorating the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary, the event also marked Trump’s 79th birthday. The former president and first lady stood side by side in a scene full of military formality as they entered the stage to a 21-gun salute and “Hail to the Chief.”

However, Melania put a soft hand on Trump’s back as he approached the podium, and he touched her back in return. Then, according to lip reader Jeremy Freeman, a gentle conversation was captured:

With his jacket unbuttoned, arms resting on his thighs, and his hands in a downward steeple, Trump appeared to minimize the formality of the event, according to Judi. Melania, on the other hand, exuded a refined, dominant presence in her cream, double-breasted suit.

Trump’s smile was characterized as “lip-clamped” and less emotionally expressive, whereas Judi remarked, “She performs a wide, Duchenne smile.”

There were some lighter moments throughout the event. Another lip reader, Nicola Hickling, claimed that the couple had a lighthearted conversation as they observed the passing troops.

However, Trump’s demeanor indicated a conscious attempt to soften the situation. Experts interpreted his suit, unbuttoned jacket, and informal salute as an attempt to be respectful without being assimilated into the military.

Judi said, “He didn’t come to pretend to be them; he came to honor them.”
