He Threw My Son Out While I Was Away — He Didn’t Expect What Came Next

The day I came home early from Germany broke my belief that I had married a man who was reliable and trustworthy. I thought I would be reunited with my family, but instead I discovered my 17-year-old son, Caleb, gone. After a quick panic attack and a desperate search, I discovered him searching through trash three blocks away. He was thin, filthy, and afraid, and he was not himself.

I was horrified to discover that my husband, Travis, had expelled Caleb from the house weeks prior without informing me. According to Caleb, Travis called him rude and threatened to fabricate a story if Caleb attempted to get in touch with me while I was overseas. My son had been sleeping in garages, eating food that had gone bad, and getting by on his own.

Travis made our house a regular party spot while Caleb struggled on the streets. I was furious at Travis for his brutality and at myself for abandoning my son when he most needed me. I immediately took Caleb home, fed him something hot, and called Marcus, a former police officer and close friend, urgently.

Marcus and I came up with a strategy to make Travis answerable. We confronted him and demanded $15,000 while feigning an arrest. Fearing legal repercussions, Travis gave it up without objecting. Determined to cut all connections, I filed for divorce the very next day. I stood my ground and told Travis, “You failed my son,” when he confronted me in my office. We’re finished.

Caleb received all of that money from me, and I instructed him to spend it wisely. Then, just the two of us, we moved into a small apartment near his school and started to rebuild our lives.

Though quieter now, life is full of purpose and strength. Caleb will always come first from now on.
