Dannion Brinkley reveals what he saw when dead for 28 minutes

Very few people can speak with as much certainty about what happens after death as Dannion Brinkley. The former U.S. Marine experienced something most of us can barely imagine—being declared dead for 28 minutes after a lightning strike—only to return to life with memories that defy conventional explanation.

In 1975, Brinkley’s life changed in an instant. On September 17, during an ordinary day, lightning traveled down a phone line while he was holding the receiver to his ear. It struck with unimaginable force, entering his head just above his ear and shooting down his spine.

“It welded the nails of the heels of my shoes to the floor,” Brinkley told 8 News Now. “It threw me up in the air—I saw the ceiling before it slammed me back down. A ball of fire came through the room and blinded me. I was burning. I was on fire. I was paralyzed.”

The odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are less than one in a million. Yet Brinkley not only survived the impact but endured something even rarer—his consciousness left his body, embarking on a journey that would change his understanding of life and death forever.

For 28 minutes, Brinkley was clinically dead. His body was even taken to the morgue before he returned. But in those moments away from the physical world, everything was far from black and empty.

He remembers floating alongside the ambulance that carried his lifeless body, observing everything from above. Once at the hospital, he watched as doctors pronounced him dead. Then, he says, he was drawn through a tunnel of light, eventually arriving in what he calls a “Crystal City,” where he encountered a radiant spiritual being.

In this place beyond life, Brinkley experienced what he describes as a full panoramic review of his existence:

“You watch your entire life unfold in a 360-degree panorama,” he explained. “You see it not just from your own eyes, but from every person you’ve ever interacted with. And then you ask: in this life you just lived, what difference did you and God make?”

This profound encounter didn’t just end there. Brinkley has had two more near-death experiences since. In 1989, while undergoing open-heart surgery, he says he was reunited with angelic guides who taught him how to use newfound psychic and spiritual abilities to help those nearing death. Later, during brain surgery, he had yet another brush with the other side.

Through all three experiences, one lesson has remained constant for Brinkley:

“When you learn you don’t die—when you realize you’re a spiritual being and there’s no hell to fear—that’s enough to inspire you to change everything,”

he said.
Despite skepticism from some, Brinkley has never wavered in his account of what he saw and felt. His story continues to spark conversations about life, death, and what might come after.

What do you think happens when we die? Would you believe a man who’s been there and returned three times?
