Everybody loved Elvis Presley in this movie – but few noticed the weird detail about his hair

Love Me Tender, Elvis Presley’s Film Debut, Is An Everlasting Treasure

Did you know that Love Me Tender is available on YouTube for free? For fans, it serves as a nostalgic reminder of the King’s early Hollywood charm, while for newcomers, it offers a unique look at Elvis Presley’s acting debut.

The Reno Brothers was the original title of the 1956 release, but it was changed to promote the popular song “Love Me Tender.” Based loosely on a real historical figure, Elvis plays Clint Reno in a post-Civil War setting. Elvis took his part seriously, learning all of the lines and impressing the crew with his commitment despite being third-billed.

Hysteria erupted during the movie’s premiere in New York, where over 1,500 fans crowded the theater and screamed so loudly that many of Elvis Presley’s lines were muffled. Producers swiftly added scenes and songs to capitalize on his star power, even though he wasn’t originally supposed to sing in the movie.

Elvis developed a strong bond with co-star Debra Paget behind the scenes, and it has even been reported that he proposed to her. Priscilla Presley later imitated her hairstyle to attract Elvis Presley’s attention, demonstrating the lasting impact of her refusal.

Because his mother was so upset by the decision to have Elvis die in the movie, the producers included a final silhouette scene of him singing, which is heartwarming but erratic because of his dyed-black hair.

The movie also features endearing blunders, such as background cars in Civil War scenes and contemporary zippers. Love Me Tender, the debut of a legend who gave it his all from the beginning, is still regarded as a cultural landmark.
