Chilling text from pregnant teen found dead in boyfriend’s backyard

Tragic Death of 18-Year-Old Kylee Monteiro

Kylee Monteiro, just 18 and 11 weeks pregnant, was allegedly killed by 22-year-old Gregory Groom, who prosecutors say then buried her in his grandparents’ backyard, attempting to conceal the crime with cut trees and brush.

Final Message

On August 7, Monteiro sent a chilling text to her sister Faith, describing a violent attack by her boyfriend:

“He threw me on the ground, pulled my hair, and strangled me. My phone’s at 4 percent—if I die, it was Greg.”

The following morning, Groom reported Monteiro missing to police in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. He claimed that after she left a residential program, she had come to his home on August 6 for a visit, that they argued over her living arrangements, and that she eventually left.

Concern and Investigation

Monteiro’s sudden disappearance alarmed her family, especially as she had been very active on social media. On her TikTok account, she had announced her pregnancy and described Groom as treating her like “gold,” according to CBS News. Her sister Faith later clarified, “I know there’s been a lot of speculation of domestic abuse, but that wasn’t the case in their relationship.”

Authorities launched a large-scale search on August 8. Groom was initially charged with aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant person, domestic assault, and witness intimidation.

Alleged Confession

When police indicated they would search his grandparents’ property on County Street in Rehoboth, Groom allegedly confessed. Prosecutor Jason Mohan said Groom admitted stabbing Kylee twice in the neck and once in the chest with a kitchen knife after an argument behind a shed. The knife broke during the attack. He then allegedly dragged her body about 20 yards and buried it roughly five feet underground.

Groom reportedly drew a basic map to show authorities the grave’s location. Search teams found a disturbed area hidden by brush and cut trees. Despite the alleged confession, Groom pleaded not guilty and remains held without bail. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for September 10.

Remembering Kylee

Monteiro had just graduated from Attleboro High School earlier that summer. It is not yet confirmed whether the baby she was carrying was Groom’s. Family and friends remember her as loving and cheerful.

“She was so loving and caring, and I love her so much. My daughter was her best friend,” said family friend Kira Schofield.

Faith Monteiro shared her grief: “I lost my sister. I will never see her again, say goodbye, or tell her I love her.” She described Kylee as outgoing, kind, and a lover of animals.

Community Response

Bristol County District Attorney Tom Quinn offered condolences to the family:

“This is a very difficult time. We extend our sympathies and ask for patience with the process despite the trauma they are experiencing.”

A vigil to honor Kylee’s memory, Vigil of Hope for Kylee Monteiro, is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, at 7 PM at Redway Plain & The Veterans Memorial Gazebo in Rehoboth.
