Women share Ozempic side effect known as ‘ozempic vulva’

As the use of Ozempic continues to rise, more people are beginning to speak openly about unexpected side effects. The medication, originally developed to help people with Type 2 diabetes regulate their blood sugar, quickly gained popularity for its weight loss benefits. By slowing down digestion, it prolongs the feeling of fullness, making it easier for users to reduce their food intake and, when combined with lifestyle changes, shed weight rapidly.

Like many drugs, however, Ozempic has a growing list of side effects. Commonly reported issues include nausea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort. Beyond these, some users have spoken about less conventional changes, such as hair thinning, signs of premature aging, and even alterations in their smiles. Now, a newer claim is gaining attention: what some are calling “Ozempic vulva.”

Although not officially recognized by the manufacturers, physicians are starting to weigh in on these reports. Dr. Tahery, a Los Angeles-based physician, has highlighted three possible changes to the vulva and vagina linked to the medication: sagging of the outer labia, weakening of vaginal muscles, and dryness. These concerns echo the experiences of several users who have taken to online communities such as Reddit to share their worries.

The reasoning, according to medical professionals, stems from the rapid weight loss associated with Ozempic. When the body loses fat at a significant rate, the effects are not limited to the waistline or face. Subcutaneous fat diminishes throughout the body, including in areas such as the mons pubis and labia majora. Dr. Justin Perron of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons explained that this loss of tissue can lead to sagging or a deflated appearance, much like what happens with facial changes after weight loss.

Compounding this, Ozempic is believed to affect not only fat stores but also muscle mass. This means pelvic muscles may weaken over time, potentially contributing to further changes in vaginal structure and strength. Adding to this, U.S. gynecologist Dr. Melanie Bone has pointed out that shifts in hormone balance and hydration levels can result in vaginal dryness and discomfort.

Faced with these changes, some patients have begun seeking cosmetic treatments such as dermal fillers, marketed under the umbrella of “genital rejuvenation,” to restore volume and firmness to the area. While such procedures may offer an option for those unhappy with the physical effects, they also highlight the extent to which weight-loss medications can influence body image and confidence in unexpected ways.

Although not everyone using Ozempic will experience these particular side effects, the growing number of reports suggests that more research may be needed to fully understand the broader impact of the medication. As with any drug, the benefits come with risks, and for some users, the physical changes may extend far beyond what they initially anticipated.
